Bangladesh Bank has announced a new directive requiring all scheduled banks in Bangladesh to add QR codes to bank statements and solvency certificates submitted for visa applications. The initiative aims to increase transparency, reduce document forgery, and simplify the visa verification process for embassies and visa processing centres.
The circular was issued on 12 May by the Banking Regulation and Policy Department of Bangladesh Bank and will become mandatory within the next 90 days.
Why Bangladesh Bank Introduced QR Codes for Visa Documents
According to the central bank, many embassies and visa centres currently face challenges in instantly verifying the authenticity of financial documents submitted by Bangladeshi visa applicants. As a result, visa processing often becomes slower and administrative costs increase.
To solve this issue, Bangladesh Bank has instructed banks to introduce an online verification system through QR codes. This digital system will allow embassies and authorities to verify financial documents quickly and accurately.
What Information Will Be Available Through the QR Code?
Under the new guideline, all bank statements, solvency certificates, and investment certificates prepared for visa purposes must include a digitally verifiable QR code.
After scanning the QR code, visa authorities will be able to confirm important details such as:
- Customer account number
- Account holder name
- Opening balance
- Closing balance
- Date of statement issuance
This move is expected to improve trust in financial documents submitted with visa applications and reduce the chances of fake or altered bank statements.
Banks Must Store Verification Data for 6 Months
Bangladesh Bank has also directed all scheduled banks to preserve the QR code verification data online for at least six months. This will help embassies and visa processing centres access and verify applicant information whenever required during the visa review process.
How This Will Benefit Visa Applicants
The introduction of QR code verification is expected to bring several benefits for Bangladeshi travelers and visa applicants, including:
- Faster visa processing
- Reduced document verification delays
- Improved credibility of financial documents
- Lower risk of document forgery
- Easier verification process for embassies and visa centres
For travelers applying for tourist, student, business, or immigration visas, this digital verification system could make the overall application process smoother and more reliable.
